Mac: Applications randomly crashing citing Finderkit error

Saturday morning saw an futile attempt to lay the groundwork for my Live Coding Project. I created the project on Github and attempted to clone it via the App only to have it crash, a restart didn't help so I opened iTerm to clone manually. I didn't think much of it at the time until I opened my IDE (because some formatting rules had been bugging me) upon importing the new folder as a project the IDE crashed just like the Github App earlier. Curious about the cause I followed the prompts to report the error to see what would be sent. The following may not be the exact error as I forgot to save it before I fixed the problem.

PlugIn Path: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/FinderKit.framework/Versions/A/FinderKit
PlugIn Identifier:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000005
Crashed Thread: 0

Earlier that morning I had updated OSX (which had failed upon reboot... story of my life with this old iMac), but was able to continue the installation again after a second reboot. The problem was happening every time an application tried to call the directory/file dialog from FinderKit. I tested it in my IDE, Chrome, and finally Safari. It was happening regardless of application publisher. So with the idea that Finder was the problem I went hunting for a solution.

There were many that I tried, from recursively deleting .DS_Store files to checking and fixing Disk Permissions via Disk Utility, none of these worked. I then stumbled upon a suggestion to reboot it in Safe Mode to make the changes. So off to safe mode I go and try fixing the Disk Permissions again, this appeared to change nothing. However, upon reboot my iMac was working like normal again. Did the Disk Permission fix work in Safe Mode, or was it just Safe Mode that fixed it? Honestly I don't care, I do care that I now have a working machine that I can do my Live Coding from.
